Another Late Rally Keeps Boozers Undefeated

Brett Holmes
A clutch hit by Brett Holmes in the bottom of the seventh gave the Boozers another come-from-behind win, their second straight over GD. That helped the aging veteran forget a rather dismal day at the plate (1-for-5) and a bad outing in left field. But the walkoff heroics masked another late inning collapse by the Boozers, who surrendered six runs, and a four run lead, in the top of the seventh before Holmes redeemed himself and his teammates.

The Boozers started off strong again, scoring nine runs in the first two innings while holding the GD offense to a single run. Much of the damage was done by the top of the Boozers order with stalwart lead-off man Bruce Brown and player/manager Doug Armstrong setting the table for number three hitter Craig Tulig and Jim Schramm in the clean-up spot, who was a late call-up from the Boozer's New Jersey farm club. But what looked like an easy day at the ballyard all changed in the top of the third as GD poured across nine runs of their own to take a 10 - 9 lead. The Boozers rallied for four of their own in the bottom half of the inning, then added three more to their lead as the GD bats went silent for the 4th and 5th innings. After putting up three runs in the top of the sixth and holding the Boozers to only one run in the bottom of that inning GD entered the final frame trailing by only four runs. They promptly took advantage of some bad pitching by Armstrong and couple of miscues in the field and, before you knew it, had grabbed a two run lead.

Luckily the Boozers had the top of their order coming to the plate for the bottom of the seventh. After Brown reached on an error and Armstrong popped out Tulig doubled home Brown, then scored to tie the game on a triple by Schramm. That brought up Holmes, who up until that point hadn't had a hit all day, although he could have easily had a home run in the fifth but for a miraculous play by the GD right-fielder. Hobbled by a nagging injury all game, Holmes nonetheless needed only to hit something in the outfield to push across the winning run. But it looked like that might be a struggle when on the first pitch he nearly fouled out to third. Unfazed, Holmes promptly ripped a stinging line drive to right to plate Schramm and secure the Boozers fourth straight victory.

The win leaves the Boozers perfect record intact at 4 - 0, with the Isotopes (2 - 2) 2 games back, 2½ in front of the GD squad (2 - 3), and three games up on the struggling Muzi team (0 - 3).
