Boozers Rally Late, Fall In Extra Innings

Doug Armstrong

An undermanned Boozer squad staged a 7th inning 7-run rally to force extra innings against archrival GD on Wednesday, but the GD offense sealed the Boozers fate in the 8th with 5 runs. GD was able to take advantage of the Boozers manpower shortage throughout the game, but it made the most of the situation in the final frame, scoring 5 runs by hitting gaps and wearing out the Boozer outfield.

The night started out ominously for the Boozers, who failed to score a first inning run for the first time this season. But the defense managed to hold GD scoreless as well. In fact, the game was a very tight affair through four innings. GD held a two run lead entering the top half of the fifth inning when they managed to open up their lead, scoring 7 runs. Two of those runs were the direct result of the Boozers 8-man lineup, which forced them to forego manning the catcher position, thus they had to concede a couple of runs on infield grounders for lack of a catcher. The Boozers managed to get back 4 runs in the bottom half of the inning, but the damage had been done.

After trading runs in the sixth GD grabbed a couple more runs in the top of the seventh to take a seven run lead into the bottom of the seventh. That set the stage for the Boozers' late rally. GD pulled starter Bob Weishour for the bottom of the seventh, and the Boozers took advantage with an explosion of hits off the GD closer. The inning was capped by Paul Smith's first career grand slam to tie the score at 17. The Boozers loaded the bases again, but could not push across the winning run.

GD put five runs on the board in the top of the eighth, and then returned their starter to the mound for the bottom of the inning. The Boozers failed to come up with another miracle in the eighth, and went down to their first loss of the young season.

Once again the offense was led by the top four batters in the Boozer order: Brian Spaulding (4-for-7, 3 runs, 4 RBI), ageless veteran Brett Holmes (4-for-6, 3B, 1 run, 3 RBI) who was back in left field and only burned like bad toast once, Rookie SS Paul Smith (2 runs, GS, 4 RBI), and cleanup man Craig Tulig (3-for-6, HR, 5 RBI).

But on a night when GD was putting the ball where the fielder's weren't, the offense couldn't make up for the lack of defense.
