Ford's Clutch Hitting Caps 10 Run Rally, Propels Boozers to Victory

WLMSPIH
A base clearing four run, two out single in the top of the 7th inning by clutch hitting infielder Sean Ford capped a ten run comeback by the Boozers last night. The momentum carried over into the extra frame when the Boozer offense put up seven more runs to seal a wild victory over a determined, but possibly overconfident, GD squad

The Boozers entered the top of the seventh trailing by ten runs but immediately rose to the challenge as the first three batters reached safely, pushing Gerardo Orlando across. After a ground out by veteran Dan Dischinger newcomer Steve Harris stepped to the plate and promptly belted a 3-run home run on the first pitch he saw. It was Harris' second homer of the game. But the Boozers were far from finished at that point. The next batter, aging pitcher Doug Armstrong, managed a single. Then after GD got Swingin' Sam Ianni to ground to the pitcher the next three batters kept the two out rally alive, driving in two more runs to cut the deficit to 22 - 18. That left the bases loaded and set the stage for the heroics by "Sluggin' Sean". He ripped one of his patented sizzling shots in the hole between third and short, scoring newcomer Mike Mutter easily. The GD leftfielder then misplayed the ball and it rolled into deep left. That allowed the two other baserunners to score easily. Ford then showed off his blazing speed, charging into third and blowing through the stop sign on his way home to tie the score, despite the fact that the GD shortstop had already taken the throw in from the outfield. Apparently Ford's bold dash for the plate unnerved the usually steady SS, whose throw sailed high to the backstop as Ford crossed the plate to tie the game at 22 - 22. Recall that it was Ford whose hit in the bottom of the seventh in the Boozers' opener propelled them to a win in that game. He is showing himself to be quite a clutch hitter early in the season.

The Boozers set down GD in order in the bottom of the seventh, so it was on to extra innings. In the top of the eighth the first two Boozers were retired but the next seven scored before GD finally got out of the inning. GD started to rally in the bottom of the eighth, but only got two runs across before the Boozers sealed the victory.

The amazing comeback overshadowed a good offensive performance by GD, who had led for most of the game after a 10-run first inning. They survived a mid-game rally by the Boozers, who scored four in the 4th and five more in the 5th and actually had a one run lead going to the bottom of the 5th. That's when GD scored eight runs, followed by three more in the sixth to take that 10 run lead into the 7th.

Another bright spot that can't be overlooked was the play of three newcomers to the Boozer squad. Steve Harris showed explosive power with two monstrous home runs that had jaws dropping on both benches. Rookie Nate Gurevich scored three times and played some solid defense when it was needed, both in the outfield and at 2B. And Mike Mutter was 4-for-5 with a triple, not too mention some steady defensive play at third base.

The win moves the undefeated Boozers into sole possession of first place on the young season, but after failing in the playoffs the last two years the Boozers know that it's not as important how you start the year as how you finish it.
