Boozers Off To 2 - 0 Start

Craig Tulig Brian Spaulding

The Boozers continued their winning ways Thursday with a 15 - 11 win over a scrappy GD squad, keeping their undefeated record for the new season intact at 2 - 0. The offense, sparked by Brian Spaulding and Craig Tulig's 3-for-5 hitting, paced the attack while solid pitching by veteran Doug Armstrong was able to overcome some suspect defense all night long.

Returning veteran Brett Holmes continued his comeback with another strong night at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a triple (at his age!) and 3 RBI. His defensive play at first reminded many long-time Boozers watchers of the glory days the Boozers, with Tim Meggison manning the bag and a keg of Bud behind the oak tree at Pollard. Ah, the 80's... where did they go.

Rookie OF Hung Tran proved his nettlesome self, to his teammates as well as the GD squad, with endless chirping all night long. This despite some rather "Manny"-like baserunning efforts, including grounding into a 1-6-3 double play to end the Boozer 7th, a play which the GD fielders relished with uncontainable glee (and rightfully so). As if that weren't enough, Tran departed without speaking to the press after the game, and failed to take possession of the Boozer cooler which he is responsible for filling before the next game as a result of his final at-bat. [Talk about no 'i' in team, huh?]

The other notable happening in the game was actually a non-happening. That is, the absence of the ever-dependable 2B Beth Goan from the Boozer lineup for the first time in years, or decades perhaps! The Boozers had to scramble to fill her regular spot at second, filling in with both Curtis Clark and veteran Rob Strollo, neither of whom had much experience as middle infielders. Suffice it to say, Beth does not have to worry about losing her starting position in the near future.
