Ianni Uses Head, Secures Win In Opener

Sam Ianni
The Boozers' 2005 season got off to an exciting start against archrival Muzi on Thursday, June 2nd, with a blown one-run lead in the top of the 7th, followed by an amazing finish fit for the Not Top Ten on ESPN Sportscenter in the bottom of the inning.

The Boozers entered the top of the 7th nursing that one run lead after battling back from an early deficit. But the heart of Muzi's order was coming up, and they are a team that never gives up. With two out and a runner on third an easy grounder back to the mound eluded pitcher Doug Armstrong, allowing the tying run to cross the plate. Luckily the Boozers managed to get out of the inning with no further damage thanks to rookie 3B Brian Aldrich, whose strong throw from third after knocking down a hard grounder got the next batter by a half-step for the final out of the inning.

The bottom of the inning had the bottom third of the Boozer order coming up, a group that had so far only accounted for three of the Boozers' 15 runs to that point. After veteran Sam Ianni, returning for his 1,000th season in a Boozer uniform, flied to right to lead off the inning rookie Aldrich reached on a single to the hole at short. He was still there chatting with Ianni, who had taken up the coaching duties at first after his pop out to lead off the inning, as Rob Strollo flew out for the second out of the inning.

That brought up last year's late season callup, Sean Ford, who had expressed reservations about coming back after struggling on offense last year. But in the Boozers' opener he'd started to redeem himself, already 2-for-3 three at the plate after blistering singles in the 2nd and 4th innings and reaching on an error when the Muzi 3B couldn't handle another of him smoking hits that was scored an error in the 5th. In the 7th he delivered again, driving a grounder deep in the hole at short that Muzi SS Joe Cappa managed to get to, but realizing he had no chance to get the speedy Ford at first he took a chance on trying to end the inning by getting Aldrich at second. But his throw sailed wide and into foul territory in shallow right. Aldrich easily advanced to third and realizing that the Muzi RF was still chasing down the errant throw decided to make for the plate. As he sped home the rightfielder reached the ball and hurled a bullet toward the plate. It would have been a close play at the plate, but luckily Ianni in the first base coach's box made the best defensive play of his career without even looking. With his back to right field watching Aldrich head for home the throw careened off the back of Ianni's head, allowing the winning run to score.

Despite his fantastic play in the bottom of the 7th, the game's hero, Ianni, declined the request to have his head removed to be put on display in the Boozer Hall of Fame, stating that he'd rather wait until the end of the season before making the sacrifice.
