Rookies Help Boozers Take Home Opener 12 - 8

Stickman Master Blaster

The Boozers offseason acquisitions, SS Paul Smith and 3B Hung Tran, paid immediate dividends by keying a 12 - 8 win in the home opener against archrival Muzi on Thursday, May 27th.

The Boozers did all their scoring in the first three innings, putting up a six run first inning followed by a two run second and a four run third. Muzi made a late 4 run rally in the sixth inning to draw to within four runs, but the Boozer defense shut them down the rest of the way behind the pitching of veteran hurler Doug Armstrong.

Craig Tulig got off to a hot start offensively with 3 hits, while newcomer Smith homered in his first Boozer at-bat. Rookie Hung Tran contributed a 2-hit effort, as did the dependable Bruce Brown.

All was not perfect with the two rookies however, as they both had trouble defensively. They denied that they were nervous in their first start for the storied franchise, instead insisting they were just having to make some early season adjustments to Memorial Field's infield. So it was heartening to see them taking extra fielding practice immediately after the game, forgoing the usual postgame festivities at Dunn & Gaherins. Of course, that may also have been to avoid the Boozer tradition of rookies buying the first round on their first trip to Dunn's. Ah, but there's no avoiding that fate, boys. Believe me.
